Greater New Birth Church was established 25 years ago, located at the heart of the inner city at 2200 West Center Street. Over the past 15 years, Bishop R.J. Burt, Sr. has served as Senior Pastor. During this time membership has grown from 200 to over 2500 members under his leadership. Due to our rapid growth in membership many changes to our facility became necessary to accommodate everyone. One of the first additions was a balcony to increase our seating capacity to approximately 60 additional seats, which soon overflowed. One year later we opened up the west wall that divided the sanctuary and fellowship areas. This allowed us, through the use of removable seating, to expand our seating capacity during worship and special services. It did not take long to grow out of that area as well. This Sanctuary seats approximately 1100 members, and within a year we were in need of having two Sunday morning services: one at 9:00 am and the other at 11:30 am. On Saturday, November 4, 2006 we began our third service, which starts at 5:00 pm.
On Saturday, March 23rd, 2002, Bishop R.J. Burt and 1200 of his members marched across the street from 2200 West Center to our new Edifice at 2207 West Center. In August of 2002 Bishop Burt’s vision to seek thousands of souls reached at a new level and Grace International Fellowship was born from that vision. Currently, there are seven Bishops on the Council that helps oversee regions across the USA, the Philippines, and now Africa. On September 25, 2005 First Lady Patricia Burt was installed as Pastor alongside of Bishop R.J. Burt.
Greater New Birth Church has several Outreach ministries that are very beneficial to our community such as: Food Pantry, Prison Ministry, Street Ministry (S.W.A.T. Team), Hit ‘Em Up, and many others. Because of our tremendous and ever growing work in the community, Milwaukee Public Schools has entrusted us by placing two K-4 classes in our facility. The Family Life Center is our current project and the thrust for the Capital Campaign. This will then house our Community Development Center, Employment and Training Development Center, Greater New Birth Child Care, our Youth Services, and Activities with other community partners.
The Vision for the Greater New Birth Church is to see thousands of souls born into the body of Christ in accordance with scripture found in St. Luke 4:18, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”
